Why is Google Black

The standard Google home page is set on black today, March 29th, 2008 because….
Google users in the United States will notice today that we “turned the lights out” on the Google.com homepage as a gesture to raise awareness of a worldwide energy conservation effort called Earth Hour.

I have to admit I tend to think the [...]

Exploring old Rome without air (or time) travel Google Earth has embraced a frontier dating back 17 centuries: ancient Rome under Constantine the Great.

Lively is Dead, Long Live Google Earth?

It was a nice experiment, but it will soon be over: Google Lively will be discontinued. As Dusan Writer says: But the surprise virtual world entry is the one that arrived before Google Lively, in my opinion, and that’s Google Earth itself, which is about as comprehensive a virtual world as you can imagine. The only thing missing are avatars. Oh, and objects beyond the building facades. But with a new version of Sketch-Up - who knows, all the pieces of the pipeline are there, aren’t they? But

Google Rat-view

The Rat!, I could have sworn we covered this here but I can’t find it in the archives. Perhaps I saw it on DCist or another local blog. Anyway, I was just looking for something in Georgetown in Google Earth and saw the big rat. Poor carpenter’s union - I can’t quite read the name of the business they’re protesting in front of from the street view. The last time we discussed street view someone pointed out that the pictures aren’t all taken on the same day. I wonder how many other places the

The new 360Cities layer contains placemarks to nearly 10,000 full 360 degree panoramas which are viewable inside Google Earth. Here's what 360Cities' Jeffrey Martin has to say about being included as a Google Earth layer: "This ranks at the top of 360cities' achievements to date. It brings our beautiful content to a whole ne

Somalia Piracy Map in Google Earth

Somalia Piracy Map in Google Earth The reports of escalating incidents of piracy off the coasts of Somalia have been getting a lot of attention in recent months. The piracy has been in all the news with the recent capture of a supertanker called "Sirius Star" and hostages of its 25 crew along with a full load of oil (worth over $150 million), and the capture of a cargo vessel and hostages carrying tanks a few weeks ago. Last month, Google Earth Community (GEC) member 'expedition' created a very

Why not recent Rome? Searching the 4th dimension

Last week the BBC reported on a new addition to Google Earth: the ability to explore ancient Rome. The 3D models and virtual tours of the Rome of 2,000 years ago were created by Past Perfect Productions. I hope they move on to creating more environments for people to explore. Once there is is a market for this, standard ways of modeling and showing the past, things will get very interesting. It might be that we will be able to explore any place on Earth at any point in history. My home page f
